Is it just Birdy here, or have you gals also noticed that Jozi has turned into an International metropolis of sorts? I mean walking through Sandton City earlier this week, we couldn't make out any Souff Efriken English...
So with hundreds of tourists turning our restaurants and shopping centres into a scrum (err... wrong sport, but you get the gist), once their soccer fever subsides, you know they're going to squeeze in some cultural stuff and sightseeing too.
That's when we had our epiphany. We want in on the tourist vibe too - but the real deal beyond Sandton City and Melrose Arch fan park...
So, like any good tourist we started our mission with some research, and we found ourselves at Ancient Secrets (anyone else feeling like you're on a movie set yet?)
They do a whole bunch of things like creating tours for people who want to take belly dancing lessons in Egypt or those wanting to learn the art of an authentic Moroccan Tagine. But like we said; we're after the home grown stuff right now, so we signed up for a walking tour in Little Ethiopia... sorry where?
Who knew that in our very own Jozi there is a place that is well... so "un-Joburg"? The tour was awesome - we got to shop at stores stocking ingredients used to cook up really tasty Ethiopian dishes, we learned a bit more about the culture and how such a large Ethiopian culture landed up in Egoli, and then we even participated in a traditional coffee ceremony.
