It goes without saying that The Birdie gets to meet oodles of cool people doing this very difficult, strenuous job we do. But when we met Astrid Fleming, we think we fell in love! She’s bubbly, pretty, vivacious and spirited – just about everything we live for at The Bird.
Then she began telling us about her entrepreneurial endeavor to publish her first book, which she eventually landed up self-publishing as her wedding tribute to her closest friends and family… we got so sucked in to the excitement of Astrid’s life, we nearly forgot we had a book to review.
Looking at the cover of her novel, White Knights, our visions of Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines tapping their way into the 90’s was crushed. (very sadly, since that flick is still on our favourites list…) Anyway back to the cover - it’s got skinny white legs walking over Manhattan with a dollar-bill outfit and briefcase to match.
So now your scene is set – Wall Street, NYC, investment banking. And to be honest, we couldn’t put it down. Birdy Num Num: We've got one autographed first edition copy up for grabs. e-mail info@thehummingbird.co.za and give us your ultimate ending. The novel tells the story of blonde, British Emma who hell-bent on proving herself and her independence heads to the States to conquer the world of Wall Street. You have the flirtation with her boss; the “other women” - and by this we mean those ambitious tigresses who secretly (or maybe not so secretly) desire to see Emma’s fall. There’s the gay best friend, the mentor, the love interest, the lust interest, and Emma herself who is just an ordinary gal trying to make it.
So you think it’s predictable? And that our Emma ends up running the largest M&A company on Wall Street and proves that women are fabulous and can do anything… Well, not quite.
When we put Fleming’s book down, we had a sense that this may be a story of a time gone by. The ludicrous money, the deals, the egos… and with a certain amount of smugness we realized maybe our Emma got it right after all. But hey? You gals need to judge.
White Knights is available at select bookstores Nationwide for R195.00 excl shipping. But, for a more personal touch, contact Astrid directly and she’ll send your purchase with a signature.
